from SUSD Home page:

The “Milk Rocks” poster contest is designed to communicate nutrition and fitness through music. It is recommended for grades seven and eight. The goal is to draw a poster relating to the “Got Milk” campaign. The contest launched in 2007. Ninety-five schools nationwide and 24 million branded cartons of milk per day partnered with Evergreen Packaging, Epiphone instruments, and Foster Farms Dairy. This was the last year in our area and six schools were chosen to participate, they are Ceres Unified, Turlock Unified, Pittsburg Unified, Stockton Unified, Livermore Unified, and San Leandro Unified all in California.

Stockton Unified received 2000 fantastic posters. It was a difficult choice to choose the winner, but the winning site is Bush Elementary; the student’s name is Stefan Hong. The concert was held at Bush on March 9, 2011 and the winning poster along with other posters of appreciation were on display at the March 22nd board meeting.

“Milk Rocks” is a concert that gives positive energy on nutrition through music. Kids relate to the band and the lyrics are related to healthy eating.

USagain Clothes Recycling

logo usagain.gif        Our School is participating in a clothes Recylcing Program.  Parents may bring or send gently used clothes to deposit in our specially designed Recylcling Bin.  The recycling Program will continue through the end of the school year.

USagain Mission (from company website): to provide consumers with a convenient and eco-friendly option to rid themselves of excess clothing, which we divert from wasting in landfills for resale here in the US and abroad.

USAgain redistributes the discarded clothes they collect to places where there is a great need for these items, supporting the local and global economy in the process. By exporting textiles to struggling countries we generate revenue, create green jobs here in the US and abroad, and help to improve the well-being of people in America and around the world.

Delta Blood Bank hoping students can recruit new donors

blood-bush.jpg

Jason Carney talks to students from Bush Elementary School as they tour the Delta Blood Bank’s mobile donation unit Friday in Stockton.

STOCKTON - In its search for new blood, the Delta Blood Bank's mobile donation unit pulled up Friday morning at Bush Elementary School.

It was the third time the bus has visited a Stockton Unified site in the past two weeks, after making previous stops at the campuses of Peyton and Rio Calaveras.

The visits are part of an educational initiative by the blood bank, which also is hoping to recruit new donors in the process. The blood bank is asking students at the three schools to sign up parents and guardians to donate blood.

"During the holiday month, the blood supply is a little lower than normal," said Michelle Mills of the Delta Blood Bank. "(The school visits) have a really positive impact on the community, and it's saving lives."

Bush's fifth- through eighth-grade students attended assemblies Friday, where they learned about the importance of giving blood. They then toured the mobile donation unit.

On Dec. 13, the donors who are recruited by the Bush, Peyton and Rio Calaveras students will roll up their sleeves and give the gift of blood. The blood bank will set up donation stations at Rio Calaveras from 3 to 7 p.m. that day. Mills said she is hoping the students will sign up 75 new donors.

"Donors will come and have their blood pressure, pulse, and iron levels checked, and we'll review their medical history," Mills said. "If they are eligible to donate, we will do the donation and then give them juice and cookies."

Invest in your student's education!  Make sure they are at school everyday.  If you need to schedule doctors appointments, make sure they are after school whenever possible.

It is also extremely important that students arrive to school on time everyday.  Every minute in class is important and will help them be successful.
